Day 56 - Livorno then Lucca

Another 6:15am alarm (almost like being back at work…). A light breakfast, but as we now have a pile of coffee cards (15 coffees per card), I indulged in a flat white from the bar in the buffet for a change, not knowing when we’d get another coffee stop.  The truth is, I forgot to repack my pocket with coffee bags.

As we were on a Princess tour, that meant assembling in the theatre, so we sat with the other sticker silver 2 wearers, only to see a few familiar faces.

As always, when called, we trooped down to our coach in a long line of the usual mix of agile, walking wounded, slow and stick dependant passengers, for a coach trip to the walled city of Lucca, beyond Pisa.  Norm grabbed the best seat on the coach, just behind the rear door, but I have ways of penalising him… (pic 3)  We had a very nice guide, Virginia, who took us through the town and also through the cathedral, before leaving us on our own for an hour or so.

As always with these walled cities, a fascinating mix of buildings and narrow streets, squares etc., but our meeting point was what was once the amphitheatre.

As this wasn’t a long tour, we limited ourselves to an ice cream (I have never eaten so many ice creams in my life as I have on this cruise!) and an awful can of what was supposed to be lemon.  My ice cream was a scoop of coffee and a scoop of cherry.

On our return, it was straight up to the buffet (hey, it was lunch time).  A bit of meat stew, a bit of fish and some rice before trying to keep up with the blog.  Not easy on port days.

Just as we were leaving, the brand new Royal Princess (launched June 13th) played ”The Love Boat Theme” on its air horns, to the delight of all of us.  Friendly waves from their passengers and crew as we left.  It is certainly a large ship and several of our crew managed to spend some time aboard during the day.

After sail-away, we opted to go to the early show as it was a mix of ventriloquist Steve again and also a comedy tenor, Morgan Lee James.

As before, a great show by Steve, but really missing half his kit, as initially, it was supposed to be a full show.  The tenor was also pretty good, but I had to dive out half way through as the chilled air was making me cough (a regular problem – the air conditioning often kicks in and sends chilled air down to the seating area.  Paula always takes a warm top, just in case.) and so I watched the last few minutes from the doorway.  He seemed to go down well with the audience so probably an 8/10.

After that, to the atrium for an evening coffee for a change.  A late coffee usually helps me sleep.

Cannes tomorrow and a private tour with Sylvie de Christo.  That makes it three times in three years with her for Paula.  The alarm has to be set for 5:25am though, so another early start.
