Day 32 - Back at sea - but volcano watching at night - August 12th.

As this was the last sea day for those getting off in Rome, the daily programme had to be shuffled around a wee bit so trivia quiz was at 11am.  Enough time to grab a decent breakfast (there is always time for a decent breakfast...) before exercising the brain cells.  Our last opportunity to quiz with Darryl and Sue, Richard and Karen as they are hopping off at Rome.  We look forward to seeing Darryl and Sue again in Southampton next year.

The cookery demonstration ran 20 minutes over time, so to get back on schedule, Tom rattled through the quiz.  With a boys versus girls day, we managed nine and the girls eight on a tough quiz, but before the scoring was done, we suggested to Tom, that maybe he should award a prize to the lowest scoring team – which he did, to rapturous applause - with just 3 points!  That made us feel a bit better.

As this ran late, we missed the Dawn Nomads pre-lunch photo-shoot at 11:40, but when we got to the atrium, they were still hanging around waiting for lunch anyway. As the time between breakfast and lunch was so short, we skipped it, sadly, but opted for a coffee in the atrium, where Sarah and the boys had another popular Dixieland session.

We then rushed to Corey’s dance class which was a revision mixture and most enjoyable.

More time spent updating this blog before afternoon quiz, where we were informed that outsider, Deck Cadet Alfred had won the Dancing with the Stripes competition.  Well done Alfred!

After the quiz (which we didn’t win), we were turned out of the Vista lounge, as they needed a sound check for the second David Copperfield Show at 5:30pm.  We sneaked back in again as soon as the doors reopened and grabbed a box, as David is one of those entertainers where a front centre stage seat is not important.  In fact, videoing from a raised position is advantageous.

As usual a tremendous show, though if there was one criticism, it was that the choice of three relatively serious songs probably lowered the mood a wee bit too much.  That is the only reason I’ll give it a 9/10 instead of a 10.  Really good comedians who can entertain an audience without relying heavily on jokes that have been around on the internet for years, are a rarity and David is a real talent.

“For my next item, I need the assistance of a beautiful woman…”   David hops off stage and walks up and down the auditorium for a minute or two, scanning the crowd.

Hopping back on stage – on his own;  “Maybe I’ll do that item next time…”

We changed our minds about skipping formal night, especially once Joanne had found that was lobster night – and that our waiter Alfred and assistant waiter Vincent really wanted us to be there, as it was the famed bombe Alaska parade.  This is a Princess tradition where the chefs and the assistant waiters parade through the dining room holding the bombe Alaska’s aloft, to cheering, applause and napkin waving from the diners.

As usual, I had the lobster and prawns for my second course and the beef Wellington for my third course.

After a change of clothes, we headed up on the starboard deck as we passed the active volcano on Stromboli which spat out a few dollops of lava for us.  We were about a mile and a half away, but those with decent eyesight and those with a camera fitted with super long lens and mounted on a tripod would have enjoyed it.  There must have several hundred people outside to have a look but with an early start tomorrow, we headed to rest at 11:10pm.

A busy day tomorrow with a private tour of the Amalfi coast, the ship docking in Naples.
